Search for Pineview Perch

I went solo to Pineview this morning. The fishing was slow, but I was able to stay fairly busy with the occasional fish coming through on the finder. But the bite wasn't very good; fish would come and check out the jigs, but wouldn't always hit. It was a light bite, too, and very difficult to detect a strike. Wire bobbers saved me, or I likely wouldn't have caught anything at all. I finished with only 7 perch, and one yellow catfish. However, the weather was beautiful and I enjoyed the morning in a haze-free environment.

Rockport on the Hard Deck

Our first ice fishing trip of the year found us at Rockport Reservoir. Little Paxton caught the biggest fish of the day; a nice rainbow trout. The rest of us struggled to get hits, and I only caught one little planter rainbow. If I had caught all the fish that gave me quick bites, I'd have had a very good day. But it was difficult to set the hook on these short-biters. However the weather was great, and we got out of the inversion and haze for a few hours.
More trips to come . . .

Autumn East Canyon Action

Jon and I took the grandsons to East Canyon for a fall fishing trip in the boat. The water is extremely low, but the fish were bunched up and when we found them, there was generally a lot there. Most were between 10 and 40 feet down.
We had troubles getting hits early, but as afternoon approached, Jon put on a black Rooster-Tail to one of the poles. Then the hits started to come. Although both rods got hits. Lincoln's pole was the hot one for catching. He was kind enough to share the pole with Paxton so that they both could catch some fish.
The boys are getting better at fishing every time we go out. Here they show off some of their catch for the day.

Bear Lake Reunion Fishing Trip

While at Bear Lake on a reunion week campout, we managed to get the boat in the water a couple of times. Friday we had a banner day!
Jon started things off with this 13 pound, 8 ounce beauty caught on a one-ounce white Rooster-Tail. This is his biggest mack out of Bear Lake.

So I gave Andrew a big white Rooster-Tail, and within about 45 minutes, landed his own laker, weighing in at 13 pounds, 10 ounces. Book-end mackinaw! A perfect match!

In addition, they each caught nice cutthroat trout; Andrew's weighed just over 3 pounds, while Jon's weighed in at 6 1/2. We smoked fish as part of our dinner night festivities.
We want to go back in the fall, when the macks are in shallower water. We caught these in about 115 feet of water, about 50 feet down. Thank goodness for downriggers!

One-Sided Day on the Gorge

Cindy and I did an overnight trip to Manila, Utah, and fished the Gorge in search of Kokanee Salmon. As could be predicted, Cindy had all the action. I went without a bite. She easily had 10 hits, hooking 3 kokes in the process. I was strictly the captain of the boat on this day. On top of that, I had forgotten the fish finder, so we fished blind that morning. We should have limited out on just the action Cindy had, but a lack of hookups killed that hope.
Had koke fillets for dinner once we got home. Delicious!

Hawaii Fishing Trip Not So Hot

Despite all our efforts on a full day fishing trip, stormy weather prevailed and made for a difficult day on the water. Including sea sickness! I got it bad that morning.
Our only catches were 2 mahi mahi that Cindy and I brought in.
No marlin; no yellowfin tuna.
We did have 3 other hits that didn't hook up, and that was frustrating. But our trip to Hawaii was spectacular, and the girls just didn't want to leave! 2 weeks just wasn't enough for them.

Latest Catch

Kohen Vance Lightfoot

Born on May 21, 2013, my grandson arrived while I was at our District Championship Track & Field meet. 6 pounds, 11 ounces, and 19 1/2 inches long. He has reddish blonde hair that he must have gotten from his maternal great-grandfather.

Preparing for Hawaii fishing trip!

My most recent article in the Ogden Standard-Examiner is on "Wanna Be Pro Anglers."
But now I've got the chance to do something really spectacular; fish for big game in Hawaii!
We're taking a family trip this June; Cindy, Debbi, Maui and I. And we'll be there for 2 weeks, so I'm hoping to get several fishing trips in while there. So more later, after the trip, to report on the fishing excursions.
